Widnes is a thriving town in the heart of Cheshire, located between the major conurbations of Liverpool (25 minutes) and Manchester (45 minutes).

Widnes grew from a few small villages to become a large town during the 19th and 20th century. This was due partly to the success of its chemical manufacturing industry and the Transporter Bridge, providing the first crossing for road vehicles accross the Runcorn Gap. This bridge was replaced by the landmark 'Silver Jubilee Bridge' in 1961 (picture).

Widnes town centre has flourished over recent years and accommodates many high street names plus well known local independents. Widnes has a large traditional indoor and outdoor market and is famous for its rugby league team - Widnes Vikings.

The 2001 census described Widnes as having a district population of approximately 118,000 and 1.5 million people within 20 km of Widnes town centre.
